Fall Info Sessions
Each year, Nationally Competitive Awards Advising arranges webinars and info sessions to bring potential applicants in contact with students and alumni who have successfully advanced through these award contests. Each presentation will include time for Q&A. This year’s lineup of events includes:
Real Talk, Real Wins: A Practical Skills Writing Webinar
Wednesday, September 24, 2025, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
Join Architecture major, poet, and Jack Kent Cooke Scholar Mo Pirela to learn practical insights on finding, applying for, and following up on competitive fellowships and internships, with emphasis on the writing you’ll need to do to get toward these and other goals.
Whatever your current major, interests, activities, experiences, or goals — all are welcome to attend! This event is sponsored by the Honors College, which manages our campus’s process for advising for Nationally Competitive Awards, and by the Writing Resources Center, which provides writing support for students applying to various externally funded opportunities.

Nationally Competitive Awards for Niners in STEM
Wednesday, November 5, 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
Register for this webinar to hear two alumni panelists talk about their college-level experiences and the routes they’ve taken towards research and industry in STEM fields. Majors in STEM fields are especially encouraged to attend, but non-STEM majors can learn a lot about campus involvement, internships, graduate school, and more.
Our guest speakers are:
- Andrew Brotherton (’22). At UNC Charlotte, Andrew majored in Chemistry while also working as a medical tech; he also served nearly eight years in the U.S. Army and NC National Guard. Propelled by his research with Dr. Michael Walter, Andrew has pursued Chemistry to the graduate level at Northwestern University, where he is part of the Meade Group. Andrew received a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
- Summer Prentice (’24). Summer was an Albert Engineering Leadership Scholar at UNC Charlotte, where she majored in Civil Engineering. Balancing her studies in the University Honors Program with marching band and her leadership with the American Society of Civil Engineers, Summer also applied successfully for a DAAD-RISE internship. Through that program, she gained research experience in Augsburg, Germany. Summer is now working on the industry side for Stewart, a structural engineering firm.

Notable Niners
October 22, 2025, 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM
Register for this webinar to hear two distinguished Niner alums talk about their paths from college to career, as well as the resources they sought out and used along the way.
Our guest speakers are:
- Megan Bird, J.D. (’21). A Levine Scholar at UNC Charlotte, Megan majored in Political Science; she was a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship and recipient of the Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship. Megan went on to law school at the University of Pennsylvania and has most recently been working as an Associate at a law firm in Washington, DC.
- Hannah Javidi, Ph.D. (’18). At UNC Charlotte, Hannah majored in Psychology and Spanish, studied abroad, and participated in the Emerging Leaders Program. A scholar of sexual consent education, she earned her Ph.D. in Applied Social and Community Psychology from N.C. State University. Hannah was named to the 2025 Forbes 30 under 30 list for her achievements in North American healthcare.
Both speakers will offer a biography of themselves and their interests and goals, with emphasis on the ways the things they pursued and opportunities they took advantage of at UNC Charlotte helped prepare them for their careers beyond college.
